Power Steering Tech Tip

The following information was provided to us by fellow member, John Pizzi ~ jopizz. Thank you very much, John!

To rebuild your Squarebird power steering pump you will need a rebuild kit for an Eaton pump. They only used them up until 1965. The Edelmann 7168 is the correct kit. One place you can get them is from NAPA. The NAPA part number is NPS 7153. Make sure you read the directions and put the shaft in from the back after you replace the seal. Otherwise you will tear it. The pressure hose that they show looks correct.

How To Fix Leaking Power Steering Control Valves

The following information regarding replacing power steering control valve seals was provided by Dave Hodges ~ ayrwoof through John Pizzi ~ jopizz.

It appears that Ford was having the same issue back in the 50's and 60's. According to someone Dave spoke to who worked at an Edsel/Lincoln-Mercury dealership, the fix was to soak the seals in DOT3 brake fluid for 15-20 minutes before installing and then install them still wet. After putting the valve together, fill with Type F transmission fluid. He says he did this quite a few years ago on his '60 Squaebird and his valve is still leak free.

He got new seals from The O-Ring Store LLC: https://www.theoringstore.com/ The part number for the larger seal is 6226-07-E70. He did not have the part number for the smaller seal but they list many different Ford seal kits so it's best to give them a call. The contact information for The O-Ring Store is on their website and also will be found in the Advertisements Forum.
